Instead of heating a pot full of oil that will eventually stink up your house and add a lot of extra fat to your onion rings, try baking them or air frying the onion rings next time.

This post has been updated with a better recipe and new pictures to help you achieve crispy baked onion rings every time. I kept on putting this recipe off because of how many times I’ve struggled with getting bread crumbs to stick to every part of the onion ring. Seriously, though the struggles! Plus I’ve added oven instructions and air fryer instructions for those of you that love cooking food in your air fryer!
How do you get the coating to stick to the onion rings?
Getting the breadcrumbs to stick to the onion rings can be kind of a pain considering how oddly shaped they are. Then you have the inside part of the onion ring. The dredging set up is the same, although in the second dish I add an egg, some milk, and flour to help the breadcrumbs stick to the onion ring batter. Trust me, this works! Coating food such as chicken, fish, ravioli, or even pickles are a sinch to coat in bread crumbs.
What kind of onions are used for Onion Rings?
White onions or yellow onions work well for onion rings. I’m not a fan of the taste red onions leave behind in your mouth sometimes so that is why I use yellow or white. Try Vidalia or Walla Walla onions.
How to make Baked Onion Rings
Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
Combine ¼ cup of flour, paprika, and salt in a shallow dish.
In another shallow dish combine ¼ cup of flour, milk, and egg. Whisk until well combined.
In the last shallow dish add panko bread crumbs, salt and pepper to taste.
Cut the onion into ¼ in sliced rings.
Dip the onion into the flour until well coated. Then into the milk and egg mixture, and then into the bread crumbs. Use your fingers to help coat the onion ring slices. Continue this step until all the onion rings are coated.
Place the onion rings sheet pan and spread them out so they are in an even layer.
Bake in the preheated oven until onion rings are tender and crumbs are lightly golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes
Air Fryer Instructions:
Place the onion rings in the air fryer basket when they are coated with the breadcrumbs.
Set the air fryer to 350 degrees and the time to 10 minutes.
