Baked Sweet and Sour Chicken

Take out is always an option when it comes to certain cravings like sweet and sour chicken. Even grocery stores like Costco and Trader Joe’s have it easily ready to prepare in a meal kit with the sauce in one of those pouches.

It’s just as simple to make at home without all the processed ingredients added to it. The sauce is made on a stove top and you can cook the chicken in either an air fryer or an oven. I’ve updated this recipe to include air fryer instructions with oven instructions.

Many sweet and sour chicken recipes call bell peppers, onions, and canned pineapple.

What Ingredients do I need?

In this section, you can find substitutes or suggestions for certain ingredients. I also will try and list out what the ingredients' purpose is for.

Chicken  - Boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into even size cubes

Butter  - use your favorite kind

Sugar - for sweetness, can also sub brown sugar

Apple Cider Vinegar - this ingredient is what gives the sauce the “sour” taste

¼ cup of ketchup - gives the sauce it’s orange color

Soy Sauce - for unami flavor

Garlic Powder

Flour - can also sub cornstarch

Additional ingredients - chopped bell pepper and onion, Chopped canned pineapple (drained)

How to make Sweet and Sour Chicken

  1. Preheat oven to 425  degrees. Lightly grease a 9X13 in baking dish with cooking spray.
  2. Toss the chicken with flour or cornstarch.

Came ouu very good! I made small changes . I only had 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar so I added another 1/3 or so of pineapple juice. I also reduced sugar to 1/2 cup. Next time I think I will try to reduce sugar even more. With 1/2 cup of sugar used it still was ver sweet. Beside that everyone in my family liked it.
