
Take out is always an option when it comes to certain cravings like sweet and sour chicken. Even grocery stores like Costco and Trader Joe’s have it easily ready to prepare in a meal kit with the sauce in one of those pouches.
It’s just as simple to make at home without all the processed ingredients added to it. The sauce is made on a stove top and you can cook the chicken in either an air fryer or an oven. I’ve updated this recipe to include air fryer instructions with oven instructions.
Many sweet and sour chicken recipes call bell peppers, onions, and canned pineapple.
What Ingredients do I need?

Chicken - Boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into even size cubes
Butter - use your favorite kind
Sugar - for sweetness, can also sub brown sugar
Apple Cider Vinegar - this ingredient is what gives the sauce the “sour” taste
¼ cup of ketchup - gives the sauce it’s orange color
Soy Sauce - for unami flavor
Garlic Powder
Flour - can also sub cornstarch
Additional ingredients - chopped bell pepper and onion, Chopped canned pineapple (drained)
How to make Sweet and Sour Chicken
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Lightly grease a 9X13 in baking dish with cooking spray.
- Toss the chicken with flour or cornstarch.
- Whisk together the ingredients for the sauce in a small bowl. Add the cubed chicken to the sauce and pour the ingredients into the prepared baking dish. If you’d like to add any vegetables, now is the time.
- Bake the chicken 30 to 40 minutes or until the internal temperature of the chicken reads 165 degrees.
- Serve with rice and your favorite Chinese vegetable sides.
- Air Fryer Instructions: If you'd like to cook this chicken in the air fryer. Place the cubed chicken pieces in the air fryer for 10 minutes at 390 degrees.
- Take them out and toss them in the homemade sauce.

Came ouu very good! I made small changes . I only had 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar so I added another 1/3 or so of pineapple juice. I also reduced sugar to 1/2 cup. Next time I think I will try to reduce sugar even more. With 1/2 cup of sugar used it still was ver sweet. Beside that everyone in my family liked it.
