Homemade bacon bits are so easy to make. All you need is a food processor to make them. A knife just takes to long to cut up into smaller pieces and the bacon grease just gets all over you.

I think every home cook by now has a  food processor. It's one of the top 10 cooking appliances I own. If you don't, go out and buy one now! The nicer ones run anywhere from 100 to $200 for good brands. I've seen them at Wal-Mart for about $20.00 a food processor. The one I have is a 9 quart food processor from Cuisan Art, and I love it. In fact, it just happens to be my favorite tool in the kitchen.

Why make Bacon Bits at Home?

When you purchase store-bought bacon bits from Hormel or Mccormick they have a lot of ingredients added to them that aren't necessary. Like for instance, Mccormick's homemade bacon bits have natural and artificial coloring, yeast extract (wtf is that?), and FD&C Red 40 food coloring. Gross, who needs all that in there?

    Use Crispy Bacon

Making your own bacon bits only works with crispy bacon. If you're one of those people that don't like crispy bacon, then I guess you're out of luck. All you do is cook the bacon until it's very crispy. Place the bacon, preferably grease drained, in the food processor, and pulse it until the bacon is the size of sea salt. It's that easy!  Store the bacon bits somewhere in your fridge.

    How to make Bacon Bits

    Preheat oven to 400 degrees:

Line a large sheet pan with tinfoil.

Arrange the bacon strips on the baking sheet.

Cook for 20 minutes: The cooking time for bacon will depend on how thick your bacon is. Thinly sliced bacon takes 20 minutes, any thicker bacon will take longer.

Get rid of any excess fat by patting the tops dry with paper towels if you do not plan on using the fat for any recipes later on.

Place cooled strips of bacon in a food processor and process the bacon until fine crumbs or bits form.
