Chocolate chip cookies get an upgrade with some malted milk powder. It’s a milkshake chocolate chip cookie!

Malted Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies

There are a billion recipes for chocolate chip cookies out there and most of them require the same  5 ingredients. Butter, sugar, egg, flour, baking soda, and chocolate chips. These chocolate chip cookies have an extra added bonus to them with a little malted milk powder. Think of malted milk powder as the Unami flavor for baked desserts!

What is malted milk powder you ask? Well, it is powdered milk, found in the aisle by the hot chocolate mixes. In some grocery stores, it is located in the baking aisles. According to Wikipedia, Malted milk is a powdered gruel made from a mixture of malted barley, wheat flour, and evaporated whole milk. ... Malt powder comes in two forms: diastatic and nondiastatic. When I think of malted milk I usually think of Whopper Candies or Maltesere.  Malted milk powder is not Gluten Free.

When you were a kid you might have came home after school and stirred in some malted milk powder into a glass of milk for a snack. Think toasty caramel flavor powder that can enhance pretty much any type of dessert you can imagine.

2 sticks unsalted butter, softened

¾ cup golden brown sugar

¾ cup granulated sugar

2 whole eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

½ cup (rounded) malted milk powder

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 ¼ teaspoon baking soda

1 ¼ teaspoon salt

One 12-ounce bag milk chocolate chips

How to Make Malted Milk Cookies

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Cream the butter, then add both sugars and cream until fluffy. Add the eggs and beat slightly, then add the vanilla and beat until combined. Add the malted milk powder and beat until combined.

In a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda and salt. Add to the butter mixture, beating gently until just combined. Add the chocolate chips and stir in gently.

Drop by teaspoonfuls (or use a cookie scoop) on an ungreased baking sheet, leaving plenty of space between the cookies (they spread out quite a bit). Bake for 9 to 11 minutes. The cookies will be very flat and very chewy. Allow to cool slightly before removing from pan with a spatula.

Optional: Allow to cool completely, then use 2 cookies to make an ice cream sandwich. Add sprinkles to the sides of the ice cream, then wrap individually in plastic wrap.

Number of servings

This recipe makes a total of 36 malted milk cookies.

Tips for Malted Milk Cookies

What can I use instead of malted milk powder?

Malt powder is for flavor so instead of using malted milk powder you could sub cocoa powder or even something like Powdered Peanut Butter.

Can I freeze cookies?

Slice and bake: Shape the dough into a log. Place the raw dough on a on saran wrap or wax paper. Form the dough into a log or any shape you wish and wrap it tightly in saran wrap. When you are ready to bake them let them warm up a bit so the cookies are easy to slice.

Another way to freeze cookie dough is on a sheet pan. Scoop out the dough using cookie sized ice cream scoops and freeze them. Once the dough is solid, take them off the sheet pan and place them in a freezer bag.

You will have cookies ready for company or whenever you want one.
