Chips, guacamole, and a carved pumpkin are all you need to make this fun puking pumpkin appetizer for Halloween. The guacamole can be homemade or store-bought. Find a small to medium-sized pumpkin for this idea. A larger pumpkin would be too big and take up a lot of table space.

If you are looking for an entree idea you can do sheet pan nachos and have the guacamole spewing out of a pumpkin. It’s easy, simple, and kind of gross with the way the guacamole looks like barf. You can even get your kids involved and have them help with pumpkin carving.
I’m not the greatest pumpkin carver and I forget where I saw this idea but I thought it was brilliant and you can't mess it up unless you've never carved a pumpkin before. Heck if that's the case, then just go out and buy one of those plastic pumpkin decors. They have them at hardware stores in the Halloween decorations. To find inspiration for carving ideas you can search on Pinterest. I like to use those pumpkin carving kits and the scoop that comes with the kit makes it easy to scoop out the inside pumpkin guts. That’s the gross part to me and my least favorite part of carving pumpkins.
Save the pumpkin seeds because next week I’ll have a recipe for roasted pumpkin seeds. This month will be full of easy Halloween themed pumpkin ideas.
How to Make Puking Pumpkins
- Carve Pumpkin: Cut out a small circle at the tip of the pumpkin, big enough to comfortably fit your hand in. Using a spoon, scoop out all the center of the pumpkin. Cut out eyes and a mouth in any style you fancy, preferably resulting in the pumpkin looking unwell!
- Guacamole: Slice avocado in half, and take the large seed out. Scoop out the avocados transfer them to a bowl. Mash the avocados with a fork and add the onion, tomatoes, coriander, lime juice, garlic, olive oil, chili, salt, and pepper. Mix further until the desired texture. Taste for further seasoning.
- Place the pumpkin with the mouth facing the plate and scoop the guacamole coming out of it, vomit style. Add chips and tuck in!
Tips for Puking Pumpkins
Store-bought guacamole can be used if you do not want to make your own.
Depending on the size or group of people you are feeding, you might want to use a larger serving platter or longer plate for the chips and guacamole.
For creamier guacamole add a dollop of sour cream.
