โญ Why Youโ€™ll Love This Recipe

    • Restaurant-quality flavor without complicated steps โ€” Ina uses simple techniques that work every time.
    • Ultra creamy cheese sauce made with sharp cheddar + Gruyรจre for deep, rich flavor.
    • Perfect for special occasions like birthdays, holidays, or date nights at home.
    • Customizable โ€” you can use fresh lobster, frozen lobster meat, or even shrimp.
    • Leftovers are incredible (honestly, the flavors get even better the next day).
    • This is a well-tested, reliable recipe from one of the most trusted cooks in American home cooking. My own version includes experience-driven tips so it turns out perfect in your kitchen too.

    What Ingredients do I need?

    • 1 quart milk โ€“ The base of the creamy bรฉchamel sauce that makes this mac and cheese rich and smooth.
    • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, divided โ€“ Used to create the roux for the cheese sauce and to add richness to the breadcrumb topping.
    • ยฝ cup all-purpose flour โ€“ Combined with butter to form a roux, which thickens the cheese sauce.
    • 12 ounces Gruyere, grated (4 cups) โ€“ A nutty, melty cheese that gives the mac and cheese deep flavor and incredible creaminess.
    • 8 ounces extra-sharp Cheddar, grated (2 cups) โ€“ Adds bold cheddar flavor and pairs perfectly with the Gruyere.
    • ยฝ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper โ€“ Adds a subtle warmth and balances the richness of the cheese sauce.
    • ยฝ teaspoon ground nutmeg โ€“ A classic addition to bรฉchamel that enhances the overall flavor without overpowering the dish.
    • ยพ pound fresh tomatoes (4 small) โ€“ Sliced and layered on top to add brightness and balance to the rich mac and cheese.
    • 1 ยฝ cups fresh white bread crumbs (5 slices, crusts removed) โ€“ Creates a buttery, crispy topping that contrasts beautifully with the creamy pasta.
    • Lobster - the star of the dish!

    Substitution Tips

    • Lobster: If lobster is too pricey, you can use shrimp, langostino tails, or even crab. They all work beautifully.
    • Gruyรจre: Swiss cheese or Jarlsberg are great budget-friendly substitutes.
    • Whole milk: 2% works, but the sauce wonโ€™t be quite as rich.
    • Breadcrumbs: Panko adds an amazing crispy topping if you prefer more crunch.
    • Gluten-free: Use gluten-free pasta + a gluten-free flour blend for the roux.

How to Make Lobster Mac and Cheese

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Drizzle oil into a large pot of boiling salted water. Add the pasta and cook according to the directions on the package, 6 to 8 minutes. Drain well.

Meanwhile, heat the milk in a small saucepan, but don't boil it. In a large pot, melt 6 tablespoons of butter and add the flour.

How to make Ina Garten's Lobster Mac and Cheese.

Cook over low heat for 2 minutes, stirring with a whisk. Still whisking, add the hot milk and cook for a minute or two more, until thickened and smooth. Off the heat, add the Gruyere, Cheddar, 1 tablespoon salt, the pepper, and nutmeg.

How to make Ina Garten's Lobster Mac and Cheese.

Add the cooked macaroni and lobster and stir well. Place the mixture in 6 to 8 individual gratin dishes.

Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter, combine them with the fresh bread crumbs, and sprinkle on the top. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbly and the macaroni is browned on the top.

This is a very similar recipe to her regular Ina Garten Mac and Cheese that uses the same cheese, bread crumbs, and tomato slices!

๐Ÿฆž How to Cook Lobster Tails for Mac and Cheese

If youโ€™re making lobster mac and cheese, you can cook the lobster tails a few different ways depending on the flavor and texture you want.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Oven Baked Lobster Tails: For a simple and reliable option, try making baked lobster tails with garlic butter in the oven. Baked Lobster Tails with Garlic Butter

Smoked Lobster Tails: If you want to add more flavor, try smoked lobster tails. Smoking gives the lobster a rich, slightly smoky taste that pairs really well with creamy mac and cheese Smoked Lobster Tails

Pro Tips for Perfect Lobster Mac & Cheese

    • Grate your own cheese. Pre-shredded cheese doesnโ€™t melt as smoothly.
    • Donโ€™t overcook the pasta. Slightly underdone pasta gives you the perfect texture after baking.
    • Let the sauce thicken fully. If your roux is too thin, the mac and cheese will be runny.
    • Use lots of lobster. Inaโ€™s recipe is generous - donโ€™t skimp!
    • If using frozen lobster: thaw fully and pat dry so the sauce stays thick.

    Recipe FAQS

Can I freeze lobster mac and cheese?

You can, but the texture is best fresh. Freeze unbaked for up to 2 months. Thaw and bake as directed.

Can I make this without lobster?

Absolutely. It becomes Inaโ€™s classic baked mac and cheese โ€” still incredibly delicious.
