93% lean ground beef is one of my favorite proteins to prep for the week cause you can turn it into tacos, lasagna, or dips.
I add this seasoning to ground beef for easy week night tacos.
You probably have all the ingredients already in your pantry to make this low sodium taco seasoning. Keep it stored in an air tight container.
Don't Buy The Packets!
For the longest time, I have been using store bought seasoning packets. I remember growing up as a kid and tacos were made in the house, that is what my mom or dad always used. EASY right? My favorite taco seasoning packet is Mrs. Dash because it is low in sodium. I thought it was time that I started making my own taco seasoning without all the extra added salt. If you use a packet of taco seasoning I won't tell anyone. 🙂
When you are ready to add your low sodium taco seasoning to the skillet make sure all the fat is drained first. Add in 7 teaspoons (that is equivalent to 1.5 oz packet of taco seasoning a long with ¾ cup of water. Let the taco seasoning and water simmer with the beef for 3 minutes on medium low until the beef mixture has thickened.
Ingredients Needed for Taco Seasoning
All you need to make taco seasoning is 4 basic spices. I always keep chili powder, cumin, onion powder, and garlic powder on hand. These are the same spices that are also found in chili.
- Chili powder - Is a blend of mixed red chilis that have been dried up and pulverized until it resembles powder. Sometimes other spices like cumin and paprika
- Cumin - is a member of the parsley family. It is a dried seed that is made from a plant called Cuminum cyminum.
Paprika - is a spice made from ground, dried fruits of Capsicum annuum, a type of pepper plant. It is typically sweet and mild, but can also have a slightly bitter or spicy taste depending on the variety used.
Garlic powder - is made from dehydrated garlic cloves and like the chili powder above it gets pulverized into a powder or flour consistency.
Onion powder - Onion powder is dehydrated, ground onion that is commonly used as a seasoning. Some people do not like the taste of freshly chopped onion so onion powder is a great substitute if you have a picky eater like that in your house.
Cornstarch - to help thicken the taco sauce when cooking the ground beef - See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.
