This air fried fish filet sandwich is almost an exact replica of Mcdonald’s Filet O Fish sandwich but it is much healthier and not deep fried in a lot of oil!

Air Fryer Crispy Fish sandwich with homemade Tartar Sauce.

Have you ever tried making your own fish sandwich in the air fryer? It tastes so much better and there’s way less oil involved if you use an air fryer. Don't have an air fryer? You can pan-fry the fish or bake them in your oven instead.

The air fryer is one of my favorite kitchen appliances. Check out some of these recipes! Air Fryer Chicken Parmesan, Air Fryer Oreos with Crescent Roll Dough,  Air Fryer Grilled Cheese, and Air Fryer Toasted Ravioli.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

Lent season is upon us and one of my favorite things to eat are fish sandwiches during this time because all the fast food places have them out! They are so easy to make at home with your air fryer.

Just dip the fish in egg wash and bread crumbs and air fryer the cod or whatever type of fish you prefer, and plop it in between a brioche bun and some cheese.

Sometimes when I'm in a hurry I will use some already prepared breaded fish filets from the freezer section. They are about the same air frying time as the cod.

    Ingredients Needed

Ingredients needed for air fryer fish sandwich.
    • White fish filets - Such as cod, tilapia, halibut, or walleye - Any white fish will work for this. Walleye, cod, or halibut are some really good choices.  My first choice is always walleye, but I did not have any walleye in my fridge at the time.
    • Old Bay Seasoning - Old Bay seasoning is a blend of herbs and spices that was developed in the Chesapeake Bay area of the United States. The seasoning typically contains celery salt, black pepper, paprika, and other spices plus it has a strong, savory flavor.
    • Egg, beaten with a fork or whisk
    • Panko bread crumbs - are a type of breadcrumb commonly used in Japanese cuisine. Panko bread crumbs can be found in most grocery stores and are often used as a substitute for traditional breadcrumbs in recipes.
    • Low fat American Cheese Singles
    • Light hamburger buns or brioche buns (will be more points)

Air Fry:  Place the fish in your air fryer basket and set the temperature for 350 and the time to 12 minutes. Spray the fish with cooking spray and close the basket.

Flip the fish half ways through cooking at 6 minutes.

When the fish is done, take it out and set it aside on a plate.

    Recipe Tips

Toast your buns. Set the buns in the air fryer basket (white side up) and spray the buns with cooking spray. Continue cooking the buns for 2 to 3 minutes (same temperature as above) or until the buns are golden brown around the edges.

To serve: place the crispy fish filet with some cheese on top and a couple of tablespoons of the tarter sauce.  Serve immediately.

    Recipe FAQs

    What is an Air Fryer?

An air fryer is a kitchen appliance that cooks by circulating hot air around the food using the convection mechanism. It is a downsized version of the convection oven.

What are the Best Large Size Air Fryers?

If you are researching air fryers and looking to buy the best ones out there on the market I have tried and tested 2 different ones before. If you want to be able to cook more food for your family at once then get an air fryer with a large basket such as 5.3 quarts. Look for ones that say nonstick on them and has multiple program settings.
