Bahama Mama's are such a fun drink. Applebee's has a drink called the Bahama Mama and this is pretty similar. I just love the layered look the grenadine gives and that always reminds me of a scene in Big Bang Theory when Penny is training to be a bartender and the guys are requesting cocktails. Leonard mentions how this is a perfect example of how certain drinks or beverages weigh more than others do. I am a fan of fruity drinks and this Bahama Mama fits the bill. It just takes you to a tropical island. Coconut Rum, pineapple juice, and orange juice do a good job of that. This cocktail is pretty easy to make. It's equal parts of everything in the ingredients list and very easy to make for a large crowd. If you want to make this drink for a party measure the alcohol and juice in cups. This recipe just makes 1 serving.

Bahama Mama Recipe

What is a Bahama Mama?

A bahama mama is an alcoholic drink that combines regular rum, rum with coconut flavoring, grenadine, orange juice, pineapple juice and crushed ice in an electric blender.  It has all the wonderful tropical flavors you can imagine and it is the perfect summer cocktail.  You can blend it with some ice until the drink's consistency is slushy.

All the alcohol and pineapple juice can be picked up at the liquor store. I love it how my liquor store carries the smaller cans of pineapple juice. I hate to open up and waste one of those larger cans just for 1 drink. The orange juice you will have to be picked up at the grocery store unless the liquor store has that too. I looked at mine and they did not have the brand of OJ I like which is Simply Orange.

What is a Bahama Mama Made of?

1 oz of Peach Flavored Vodka
1 oz of Coconut-flavored Rum
1 splash of grenadine
1 oz of Orange Juice
1 oz of Pineapple Juice

Cocktail shaker, Hurricane Glass or Pitcher for Serving
Ice for the bottom of the glass

non-alcoholic options: tropical punch, simple syrup, grenadine syrup, pomegranate juice, lemon juice, lime juice, or pureed strawberry

How to make a Bahama Mama

Combine all ingredients into a shaker glass minus the grenadine with some ice and pour into a glass. Add a splash of Grenadine to the glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry if desired.

Post updated on May, 17th, 2019. The previous picture was driving me bonkers and need to be updated. If you're looking for a WW friendly version of this drink I don't think that is impossible. Drinks like these are what you use your Weeklies for am I right?

How Much Alcohol is in a Bahama Mama

In general, a Bahama Mama contains a moderate amount of alcohol, similar to other cocktails made with rum. The alcohol content of a Bahama Mama can range from about 12% to 20% ABV (alcohol by volume), depending on the strength of the rum used and the proportions of the other ingredients.

It's important to note that the alcohol content of a Bahama Mama can also vary depending on how it is served. For example, if the cocktail is served in a smaller glass or over less ice, the alcohol content may be higher. Conversely, if the cocktail is served in a larger glass or over more ice, the alcohol content may be lower.

Bartending Tips for Beginners

  • Always keep 6 basic liquors stocked in your bar. Those are Vodka, Whiskey, Rum, Tequila, Gin, and Brandy.
  • Different types of liqueurs are also great to have for a well stocked bar. Examples of creme based liqueurs are Rumchata, Kauhula,  or Irish Cream
  • Essential mixers to keep on hand would be ginger beer, different flavored juices, or or sodas like Sprite and Club.
  • Simple syrups are just equal parts sugar and water and you can add whatever extract flavoring you want to them.
  • Of course, always keep a variety of different cocktail glasses serving and ice on hand.
