It’s tiki time with this Blue Hawaiian cocktail! This drink is filled with 2 different kinds of liquors blue curacao and rum. Add in some creme of coconut and pineapple juice and you are instantly transported back to the tropics.

A Blue Hawaiian cocktail is basically a Pina Colada with a splash of Blue Curacao added in the drink to make it a pretty blue color.

    Blue Hawaiian Cocktail

I went to Hawaii a couple of years ago with my family and had so many good tropical flavored drinks there, so I thought I'd kick off Summer with this drink! Mai Tais and lots of Pina Coladas like this drink are popular in Hawaii. I even got to try a pina colada where they took a pineapple and hallowed out the core and filled it with a pina colada drink. It wasn't blue but it was so damn good and tasty. I can imagine those bartenders having to core out the insides of pineapple every day just to make them and what a tedious task that would have been. Fruit drinks like this blue Hawaiian are right up my alley!

My cocktail will make 2 drinks and will fill a whole hurricane glass. I garnished my Blue Hawaiians with a slice of orange but most of the time a slice of pineapple is used as a garnish. I just used whatever I had on hand.

    Ingredients for Blue Hawaiian Cocktail

    • 4 oz of Malibu Coconut Rum
    • 4 oz of Blue Curacao
    • 6 oz of pineapple juice
    • ¼ cup of cream of coconut liquor
    • 1 cup of ice
    • Maraschino Cherries
    • Umbrellas for garnish
    • Pineapple wedges

How to make Blue Hawaiian Cocktail

    1. Combine coconut rum, blue Curacao, pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and 1 cup crushed ice in a blender. Puree on high speed until smooth. Pour into chilled hurricane glass or highball glass. (You can use whatever type of glass you have on hand if you don’t have any of these glasses.
    2. Garnish with a slice of pineapple and a maraschino cherry. These are optional.

    Blue Hawaiian Cocktail Variations

Tropical Blue Hawaiian - Includes pineapple juice, coconut rum, and blue curaçao, in addition to the traditional ingredients of white rum, cream of coconut, and sweet and sour mix.

Blue Hawaiian Slush - Made by blending all of the ingredients together with ice to create a frozen cocktail.

Blue Hawaiian Martini - This version is made by shaking the ingredients together with ice and serving the cocktail in a martini glass.

Blue Hawaiian Jello Shots - For a fun twist, you can make Blue Hawaiian Jello Shots by mixing the ingredients together and setting them in small cups or containers.

Blue Hawaiian Mocktail - For a non-alcoholic version, omit the rum and use a non-alcoholic blue curaçao or blue food coloring to get the signature blue color.

    Recipe FAQS

How do you pronounce blue curacao?

Wondering what blue curaçao is? Blue Curacao is a blue colored, slightly bitter orange-flavored liqueur used in popular blue cocktails like the Blue Hawaiian, Blue Bird and many other delicious cocktails. Curacao is naturally colorless and is made from the dried peals of the laraha citrus fruit. How do you say the word curacao? Good question, because I’ve always wondered myself. It’s like the word Worcestershire sauce. I can never pronounce that word or spell it correctly like I can’t with the word curacao. Curaçao is pronounced as 'Cure-ah-souw'. The blue version is then called Blue 'Cure-ah-souw'. - source www.curacaoliqueur.com

Where did the Blue Hawaiian come from?

The Blue Hawaii was invented in 1957 by Harry Yee, legendary head bartender of the Hilton Hawaiian Village (formerly the Kaiser Hawaiian Village) in Waikiki, Hawaii when a sales representative of Dutch distiller Bols asked him to design a drink that featured their blue color of Curaçao liqueur. After experimenting with several variations he settled on a version somewhat different from the most popular version today, but with the signature blue color, pineapple wedge, and cocktail umbrella.  - source Wikipedia

    Bartending Tips for Beginners

    • Always keep 6 basic liquors stocked in your bar. Those are Vodka, Whiskey, Rum, Tequila, Gin, and Brandy.
    • Different types of liqueurs are also great to have for a well stocked bar. Examples of creme based liqueurs are Rumchata, Kauhula,  or Irish Cream
    • Essential mixers to keep on hand would be ginger beer, different flavored juices, or or sodas like Sprite and Club.
    • Simple syrups are just equal parts sugar and water and you can add whatever extract flavoring you want to them.
    • Of course, always keep a variety of different cocktail glasses serving and ice on hand.
