Why You Will Like Blackstone Patty Melts

Patty Melts are highly versatile sandwiches, and I have made these many times on a griddle or skillet. Sometimes I even cook the burger in the air fryer and then make the grilled part on the Blackstone.

The same goes for the cheese selection—while cheddar is a popular choice, you can also use mozzarella, Swiss, gouda, or any other cheese that melts well.

Pair your patty melts with this really good Tomato Soup! Always a classic!

They are almost like a grilled cheese sandwich, just with a burger in the middle of them.

Ingredients needed for Blackstone Patty Melts

    • 8 slices of sour dough bread - I like the sour dough bread at Aldi
    • 8 American Cheese Slices or Swiss Cheese Slices
    • 4 frozen burger patties - get the Grassfed Beef patties in the frozen section at Costco
    • 1 cup of mild chedddar cheese
    • 1 onion, thinly sliced
    • 4 tablespoons of butter

    Substitutions

    • Lighter Calorie Bread - Such as Sarah Lee 45 Calorie bread
    • Leaner beef patties (e.g., 90% lean) to reduce fat and calories
    • Reduce Butter You can cut back on butter to reduce the fat content.
    • Use Lighter Cheese: Try using reduced-fat cheese or a different bread (like whole wheat) to reduce calories.
    • Veggies: You could add lettuce, tomato, or pickles to add more nutrients and flavor.

How to Make Blackstone Patty Melts

Step 1 Preheat your Blackstone griddle to medium-high heat.

Step 2 Add a bit more butter to the griddle, and toss in the sliced onions. Cook them slowly, stirring occasionally, until they become golden brown and soft. This process can take about 10-15 minutes but is crucial for adding that sweet, rich flavor to your patty melt. Once the onions are caramelized, remove them from the griddle and set them aside.

Step 3 While the onions are half way done cooking, place the patties on the other side of the griddle and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side. Remove the patties from the griddle and set them aside.

Step 4 Butter one side of each slice of bread. On the unbuttered side, place a slice of Swiss cheese, followed by a beef patty, a generous helping of caramelized onions, and another slice of Swiss cheese. Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side facing out.

Place the assembled sandwiches on the griddle and cook until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.

Recipe tips for Blackstone Patty Melts

    • Use a spatula to gently press down on the sandwich while it cooks to help the cheese melt evenly. Once both sides are perfectly toasted and the cheese is gooey, remove the sandwich from the griddle. Let it cool for a minute before slicing it in half and serving. Enjoy your delicious, homemade griddle patty!
    • If the shredded cheese starts to escape from the sandwich and gets stuck on the grill or outside of the bread, just keep on cooking it on the griddle. The cheese will get nice and crusty stuck to the bread!
    • Make a garlic butter to spread over the bread instead of regular butter.
    • Try and test out a variety of different cheeses, there are endless amounts of cheeses in the supermarket today.

    How do I store leftovers?

Always store leftovers in clean, food-grade containers. The type of container doesn’t really matter. Use zip lock, glass, plastic,  whatever!  Make sure to store any leftovers in an airtight container.

Blackstone griddles are popular among outdoor cooking enthusiasts because of their versatility and they are also transportable so you can take them camping or to the lake. Unlike traditional grills.

    Blackstone Patty Melts FAQ

Why are Blackstone griddles so great?

Blackstone griddles have a flat cooking surface which allows for even heat distribution and the ability to cook a variety of foods at once. You can easily get restaurant-quality dishes cooking at home and make recipes like Blackstone Philly Cheesesteaks, Blackstone Smashburgers, or Blackstone Hibachi Chicken and Vegetables.

    Do I preheat a griddle?

Yes, it is recommended to preheat a griddle before using it. This allows for even heat distribution and can help prevent food from sticking. The exact preheating time may vary depending on the type of griddle and the desired cooking temperature, but a general rule of thumb is to preheat for about 5-10 minutes.

What if I don't have a Blackstone Griddle?

Any type of non stick skillet over a stove top will work just fine!
