Beer Brats - German Sausages submerged in onions and beer and cooked on the grill. These are a classic Summertime treat in the Midwest!

One of the foods we Midwesterners like to enjoy during the Summer is bratwursts. Cook that bratwurst in some beer and you've got a classic Midwestern favorite made on the grill. I remember having beer brats at my exes cabin all the time whenever we went there and that was the first time I had one. I'm surprised it took me this long to share the recipe on my page and Beer Brats are an easy recipe that only requires 3 ingredients.  Fargo ND also has a reputation for being one of the drunkest cities in America but that is a whole other blog post. That would maybe explain why we like our beer brats so much!?

What are Beer Brats?

Bratwursts are a type of German sausage and these sausages are cooked on the grill and usually submerged in some beer and onions. You can use a skillet made for cooking on a grill like a cast iron or just one of those grill pans you can get at any grocery store or hardware store to cook the brats in.

Ingredients for Beer Brats

6 Johnsonville Bratwurst

1 medium onion, sliced

1 12 oz bottle of beer (any kind)

How to Make Beer Brats

Heat your grill up to a medium high heat. Place a grill pan on the grill and add the sliced onions to that and a can of beer. Add the brats to the pan and cook on high for 10 to 15 minutes. If you want your brats to be a darker grill color cook them on the grill and not in the pan for a couple of minutes.

How to make Beer Brats Weight Watcher friendly?

Find a chicken sausage or turkey sausage link that is low in points and a lite beer such as Miller Lite. Wal-Mart has a brand called Sam's Choice Chicken Apple Sausage for 2  points. Johnsonville also has a chicken apple sausage brat for 4 smart points. Then just follow the recipe down below with the replaced ingredients.  A regular brat is 9 smart points and if you eat right during the day with a couple of low point meals you can enjoy a regular beer brat.

Tips for Beer Brats

Toppings for Beer Brats: I really like caramelized onions, but you can add sauerkraut, ketchup, mustard, pickles, etc.

Cooking methods for beer brats: You can cook beer brats in a cast iron skillet on your stove top or in a pan in the oven if you don't have a grill.

What to serve with beer brats: How bout some grilled corn or vegetables, potato salad, watermelon, anything you'd basically find at a BBQ.
