Grilled bananas topped with chocolate are a delicious dessert that combines the sweetness of ripe bananas with the richness of melted chocolate. The bananas are grilled until caramelized, which gives them a slightly smoky flavor that pairs perfectly with the creamy chocolate.

These can be grilled or made on a Blackstone griddle.

This dessert is a quick and easy way to satisfy your sweet tooth, and it's perfect for a summer barbecue or a cozy night in.

Why You Will Love This Recipe

Banana boats make a fantastic dessert for Summertime and they can be grilled or baked in the oven. Check out my flavor combos and list below for even more banana boat flavors you can try this Summer.

There's just something about warm bananas with melted chocolate on top. When you toast the marshmallows in the grill, this dessert almost reminds me of S'mores. Kind of like these S'more Quesadillas!

    Ingredients Needed

    Ingredients Needed for Banana Boats

Bananas - Must be unpeeled and ripe bananas. The softer they are the better!

Chocolate chips - These can be dark, semi-sweet, or milk chocolate. Mini chocolate works better cause they fit into the banana slit better.

Miniature marshmallows - Do not use the jumbo marshmallows with these!

See recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

How to make Blackstone Banana Boats

Step 1: Cut banana peel lengthwise about ½ in. deep, leaving ½ in. at both ends. Open peel wider to form a pocket.

Slip open banana peels ready for toppings.

Step 2: Fill each with 1 teaspoon chocolate chips and 1 tablespoon of marshmallows. Crimp and shape four pieces of heavy-duty foil (about 12 in. square) around bananas, forming boats.

Step 3: Grill, covered, over medium heat for 5-10 minutes or until marshmallows melt and are golden brown.

Finished grilled bananas with marshmallows and chocolate chips on a grill.

    Serving size: 1 banana boat

    Oven: 400 for 5 to 10 minutes

    Alternative Cooking Methods

    • Oven – Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 10-12 minutes.
    • Air Fryer – Cook at 375°F for 5-6 minutes.
    • Campfire – Place in the coals for 5 minutes.

    Variations to Try

Banana Boats are so versatile to work with and you can easily change up the ingredients for them if you don’t like chocolate chips and marshmallows.

Smore’s - Graham Crackers, mini marshmallows, chocolate chips

Samoa Style - coconut, chocolate chips, and toast coconut flakes

    Strawberry, Nutella, and marshmallows

Jelly and Peanut Butter Banana Boats

Nutella and Peanut Butter Banana Boats

Peanut Butter with Sliced Strawberry Banana Boats

Banana Split - strawberry sauce, crushed pineapples, cherries, and whipped topping

    Tips for Grilled Banana Boats

If you are making these banana boats on the grill use aluminum foil and wrap the sides of the banana boats up so they are easier to handle and get off the grill. Cook the banana boats on a grill grate if your fire is hot.

To tell if the banana boats are ready to eat, the bananas will be soft and not firm.

Do not cut all the way down the banana. Make sure there is at least a quarter-inch space so that the bananas can sit on a flat surface as they cook.

    Recipe FAQs

What does cooked banana taste like?

Cooked banana on a grill tastes warm and just like it tastes eatng a room-temperature banana. It's just a little warmer. It's soft and gooey.

Is it good to eat a banana every day?

Yes bananas are rich in potassium and good for heart health. However, I wouldn't eat it covered in chocolate and marshmallows every day. This is just a sweet Summer treat to enjoy every once in and while.

    How do I store leftovers?

Always store leftovers in clean, food-grade containers. The type of container doesn’t really matter. Use zip lock, glass, plastic,  whatever!  Make sure to store any leftovers in an airtight container before putting it in the freezer or fridge.

Excellent, simple treat that everyone loves! Also used up the residual heat after grilling steaks. As soon as we were done eating, these yummiest were ready!! Thanks for the great idea!
