Sandwiches

Bacon Onion Jam

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

Crisp cooked bacon with slow-cooked caramelized onions come together to make this awesome jam you can throw on any sandwich or burger. Lately, I’ve been making patty melts because Aldi has a great selection of bread and frozen burger patties are easy to make in a skillet.

Bacon Onion Jam

My love for bacon goes way back to when I first started this blog. Some of you might even be familiar with the book 50 Shades of Bacon. It can be found on Amazon.  I must admit that I don’t like cooking bacon at home much because of grease splatters or the fire alarm going off from all the smoke bacon produces. Yes, that’s happened quite a few times and can ruin your nice clothes.

That is why I prefer buying the already cooked bacon so I can just pop it in the microwave. The smell of bacon cooking along with onions is one of my most favorite smells ever. Caramelized onions and bacon go great on burgers so I thought why not make some kind of jam out of them so you don’t have to waste time cooking that before making a burger?

One thing about this bacon jam is that it takes time. Caramelized onions take a good 20 to 30 minutes to make and it takes about that long to crisp up some bacon in a large dutch oven. I talk about easy recipes on this blog a lot and this is one of them you just have to be patient with the process. 🙂

Bacon Jam recipe for 2

This bacon jam makes around 1 ½ cups of jam. If you want less jam then that it is very easy to half this recipe.

How to Make Bacon Jam

In a large skillet, cook bacon over medium-high, stirring occasionally, until fat is rendered and bacon is cooked and crisp 20 minutes.  With a slotted spoon, transfer bacon to paper towels to drain.

Pour off all but 1 tablespoon fat from skillet (reserve for another use); add onions and garlic, and cook until onions are caramelized and browned, about 20 – 30 minutes. Add the vinegar and fig jam to the onions and stir. Add bacon and stir to combine.

Transfer mixture to a jar or however you wish to store the bacon jam. If you wish for the bacon jam to be pastier or jam-like process the jam in a food processor.

Tips for Bacon Jam

Store your bacon jam in an airtight container if you don’t plan on using it all right away. It will last anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks in your fridge.

If you can’t find fig jam anywhere there are a few other substitutions you can use such as grape jelly or apricot jam. Maple syrup works wonderfully as well.

How to freeze bacon jam? You can freeze bacon jam in plastic or glass, and you can even freeze jam in zip lock freezer bags.  Make sure to get as much air out of the freezer bag as you can before storing it in the freezer.

What to serve with bacon jam?  I’ve made a baked brie once and used a store-bought bacon jam on top of the brie. It was fabulous. Like I mentioned above, you can also add it on top of burgers or sandwiches.

Patty Melt with Bacon Onion Jam

For those wondering how I made the patty melt. I just cooked a frozen burger patty in the skillet for 3 to 4 minutes aside. Transfer the patty to a plate and drain any grease out of the skillet. Butter 2 slices of bread. Return the skillet to the stovetop and place one of the slices of bread butter side down on the skillet. Add the cheese, and burger patty. Spread Bacon Onion jam on the other slice of bread and place that on the top fo the burger patty. Cook each side of the sandwich until golden brown. It is so good!
