Apple Crisp is the essential Fall dessert and it can be made in the Air Fryer! Bet you didn't know you can make sweet things in your air fryer didn't you?

Most of my air fryer recipes you've seen on my blog have been savory recipes and for the longest time, I've been wanting to experiment making sweet recipes in the air fryer.

Air Fryer Apple Crisp

What kind of dishes can I use in my air fryer?

When we make savory dishes in the air fryer we just set the food in the basket and it cooks without any special pan. With a regular oven you use baking dishes to cook baked goods in and you do the same thing with your air fryer. Some air fryers come with an accessory kit that include a baking pan and silicon cupcake molds but others don't and you have to buy items separately. I bought this smaller pie plate at a kitchen store and couldn't wait to test it with my air fryer with this apple crisp recipe.

Some examples of dishes that work in an air fryer are 4 oz ramekins, aluminum pans, pyrex, and my ceramic 5" in pie dish that I bought at a kitchen supply store. Another key to baking in your air fryer is to make sure the pan fits in the air fryer basket you have. That's pretty much a no brainer right?

Air Fryer Apple Crisp

Ingredients for Apple Crisp

For the apples:

  • Apples (any kind)
  • Cinnamon
  • Lemon Juice
  • Brown sugar

Topping Ingredients

Flour, brown sugar, salt, old fashioned oats, and butter

How to make Air Fryer Apple Crisp

Apple crisp should have a crisp and buttery streusel topping and the air fryer is really good at producing that. The apples cook covered for 15 minutes. Then the foil gets removed and the apples will bake for another 5 minutes is up, then I add the streusel topping on and continue cooking for another 5 minutes. I’ve tried making apple crisp before in an Instant Pot and that was more like apple oatmeal. The topping didn’t even get crispy at all.

Preheat air fryer to 350 degrees F. Butter a 5in oval baking dish.

Peel, core, and cut the apples into small cubes. Combine the apples with the lemon juice, sugar, and cinnamon. Pour into the dish.

Cover the dish with the aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes. Open up the air fryer and continue cooking for 5 more minutes uncovered.

To make the topping, combine the flour, sugars, salt, oatmeal, and cold butter in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on low speed until the mixture is crumbly and the butter is the size of peas. Scatter evenly over the apples.

Place the crisp back in your air fryer uncovered for 5 more minutes.

What to serve with Apple Crisp

Enjoy with some melted caramel sauce on top, whipped topping, or vanilla ice cream!

What is an Air Fryer?

An air fryer is a kitchen appliance that cooks by circulating hot air around the food using the convection mechanism. It is a downsized version of the convection oven.

Is air fried food healthy?

When you compare air fried food to deep-fried food it is much healthier because there is hardly any oil used at all. The only oil I use is from my Pam cooking spray. I spray only the food once or twice because most air fryer baskets are non stick. If you are concerned about using aerosol sprays for the environment or your health buy a Misto Brushed Aluminum Oil Sprayer can from Amazon and fill that with your favorite oil.

This was delicious and super easy to make! I used vegan butter. I don’t have a mixer so I just chopped the cold butter small and then hand mixed it with a paddle style spatula. Worked like a charm!
